Multi-Collector ICP-MS

The Nu Plasma™ multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS) is a double focusing Nier-Johnson type instrument that provides precise and accurate isotope ratio determinations, coupled with flexibility and ease of use.
Our NuPlasma instrument houses a collector array consisting of 12 Faraday buckets and three ion counters.  The collector block was designed for in situ laser ablation U-Pb geochronology studies, using the three ion counters to measure Pb isotopes of interests on the low mass side, while simultaneously measuring 238U in the highest mass faraday cup in a static configuration. See diagram below.  In addition 205Tl and 203Tl can be measured simultaneously for mass bias correction on Pb isotope ratios.

For solution mode analysis, the NuPlasma instrument comes equipped with a cyclonic spray chamber and nebuliser that are cooled using a Pelletier device. For low abundance samples requiring higher sensitivity, the Nu may be interfaced with a DSN-100 desolvation Nebuliser System. The DSN-100 incorporates a unique spray chamber design, which eliminates droplet and condensation formation. It also contains temperature regulated heaters and an innovative gas flow system that provides the best in performance and reliability. At present, we are conducting routine solution mode analyses in varied geological and biological materials for Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, Lu-Hf and Pb-Pb isotope analysis.
