EAS 392 - Research Methods (Fall, 2011)

The purpose of this course is to provide hands-on experience to students on how to conduct research in the social sciences in general and in Human Geography in particular. Using an action-oriented research approach the class will administer and analyze a combined qualitative/quantitative study on environmental perceptions of University of Alberta students. Through this hands-on process, students develop a thorough understanding of the research process from design, to implementation, to analysis and communication of findings.

EAS 494 - Environment & Health (Winter 2011)

This seminar course examines the relationships between environmental issues and health outcomes through the competing approaches of scientists, policymakers and the general public. In class students use case studies, popular reports, and academic and scientific literatures to evaluate how different players define problems and determine policy options in light of unclear and uncertain evidence in contentious environmental health issues. This course is co-taught with EAS 594 for Graduate Students. The course website is available here.

EAS 495 - Geographies of Aging (Fall, 2010)

This seminar course examines how space, place and scale are important to aging individuals and populations. Using the framework of scale, we examine the spatial experiences of aging at the level of the body, home, neighbourhood, city, region, province, country and globe. Students conduct a field-based evaluation of older adults’ use of space, and interview an older adult to develop understandings of how one’s relationship with the environment changes in later years.
