Shehla Gul

Shehla Gul is a PhD student studying how the recovery process after Kashmir earthquake of October 8, 2005 has affected the lives of women in the rural communities of Azad Kashmir. This research project will be based on a community-based qualitative case-study in Azad Kashmir to examine the impacts of the recovery process on the personal and community life of Kashmiri women. She has a MSc in Geography from the University of Peshawar, KPK, Pakistan with a specialization in Applied Geomorphology. Prior to starting her PhD, she served as a lecturer at the Institute of Geography, Urban & Regional Planning, University of Peshawar, Pakistan.


 

Kyla Mottershead

Kyla Mottershead is a Master's student studying the wildfire evacuation experiences of residents from an Aboriginal community in Alberta. This community-based, qualitative case study is part of the Aboriginal Wildfire Evacuation Partnership, a 3-year research partnership that aims to understand how First Nations residents and communities are affected by wildfire evacuations. Kyla completed a BA with a major in development studies and a minor in human geography from the University of Calgary in 2010.

Henok Asfaw

Henok W. Asfaw is a PhD student studying how remote First Nations communities in Northern Ontario (Canada) are prepared for and affected by wildfire evacuation. This research project will be based qualitative case-study. Understanding how a community prepares for and is affected by frequent hazard event provides theoretical and substantive insights that can be used to better prepare for and respond (at both individual and community level) to similar incidents which are likely to occur in the future. Henok has B.A. in Geography and a Master's degree in Development Studies specializing in Environment and Development from Addis Ababa University. Prior to starting his PhD, he served as a lecturer in Jimma University and latter in Adama Science and Technology University, Ethiopia.
