HOW TO MAKE EFFICIENT USE OF LECTURES in your STUDY PLAN
- The course is structured and paced around the textbook. Lectures are meant to clarify (and sometimes expand on) the textbook. I rely on your having read the text, so that you are aware of the CONTEXT of what I am teaching. Each day I try to stick to a theme, that is outlined at the beginning of class - but your best guarantee that (for you) the lecture material will be coherent, is to read the Chapter on which we are working, before coming to class.
- If you come to class prepared by having read the text, you already have the context - then you can appreciate the amplification/clarification I attempt to provide... my lectures are essentially reinforcing what you have already learned; and your reading has supplied the context for my lecture.
- Map discussions: these are at most once per week, on Friday. Map discussion occupies about the first 20 minutes of the lecture. I shall place the maps that are to be discussed on the course website by 5 pm the day prior to the discussion. It is your responsibility to print off the maps and bring them to class. I encourage you to bring coloured pencils or highlighters so you can mark up these maps during the discussion to bring out the most important points discussed.
